Teaching to Solve Percent Change (Word Problems) Easily
The formula for the percent change can be expressed in the following manner:
{(Final Value - Initial Value)/ Initial Value} * 100 |
The following steps discussed below can be used to solve percent change word problems easily:
Step 1: Identify the final value and the initial value from the given word problem.
Step 2: Apply the formula: {(Final Value - Initial Value)/ Initial Value} * 100
Let us take an example to understand it more clearly.
Example: The price of a teddy bear has decreased from $25 to $20 because of a discount. Find the percentage change in the amount of the teddy bear.
Solution:
Initial value of teddy bear = $25
Final value of teddy bear = $20
By applying the formula discussed above, we get: {(Final Value - Initial Value)/ Initial Value} * 100
=> {$20 - $25)/ $25} * 100 = -20%
The negative sign indicates a percentage decrease in the price of the teddy bear.
Thus, the percentage change in the amount of the teddy bear = 20%.
