Teaching the multi-step ratio problems easily.
The ratio of two numbers or quantities with the same units is expressed as q1:q2.
And the rate is expressed as 300 Km/20 hour; if it is written as 60 Km/ hour, it becomes a unit rate.
Example of a multi-step ratio problem:
A special rug is woven using 150 metres of yarn with three different colours in the given ratio. Calculate the length of blue yarn used.
10 parts Yellow yarn
7 parts Red yarn
3 parts Blue yarn
10+7+3 = 20; so, the ratio is 20 parts.
Part of the blue to the whole ratio is = 3:20
By using the concept of equivalent ratio:
3*7.5:20*7.5 = 22.5:150
This means 22.5 metres of blue yarn is used.
