Teaching Finding Unit Rates Easily
- A unit rate is the ratio between two different entities of different measurements.
- Firstly, identify the two quantities. Such as, a and b. Here, a and b are two different quantities.
- Then, determine the ratio between these two quantities. For example, a:b or a/b. The resultant value is the unit rate.
Unit Rate Formula = a:b = a/b. Where, a and b are two different quantities. |
Let us look at the given example mentioned below to understand more about ‘unit rates’.
Q. Jack harvests 20 acres per day and gets 200 bushels of wheat per acre. Using the unit rate formula, calculate the number of bushels of wheat he needs to harvest in a day.
Solution:
Step 1: Identify the two quantities.
Let, a = quantity harvested and b = number of days required.
So,
A = 20 * 200
a = 4000.
Step 2: Use the unit rate formula i.e a/b or a:b.
So,
4000/1 = 4000 bushels.
Hence, the number of bushels of wheat he needs to harvest in a day is 4000 bushels.
