Teaching Adding and Subtracting Signed Fractions

  •  Whenever, we add or subtract two fractions. First we need to take teh L.C.M of both the denominators to make it same.
  • Once both the fractions are multiplied by the common number, the denominators becomes same and it becomes easy to add and subtract them like a common number, keeping the denominator same.

Let us take an example mentioned below to understand more about adding and subtracting signed numbers.

Example 1: Add +3/4 - 5/3.

  • According to the question, 12 is the L.C.M for 4 and 3. Multiplying both the fractions by 3 and 4 respectively will make the denominators same.
  • + 9/12 + (-20/12)
  • +9 -20 / 12 = -11/12
